Teeth Whitening

"Can Teeth Whitening lighten my teeth?"

Many times I hear patients concerns about the color change in their teeth.  "What can I do about the dark color of my teeth?  It seems that the older I get the duller and more yellow my teeth become. I use a whitening toothteeth whitening before and afterpaste but the color doesn't seem to change much. What can be done with the whitening products?"

As we age our bodies change. Hair color, skin, and yes, the color of our teeth. The teeth whitening products in toothpaste only removes extrinsic stain – coffee, tea, tobacco, red wine. These stains are on the surface of the tooth. Intrinsic stains are those that are on the inside of the tooth and show through the enamel as discoloration.

Teeth whitening products can lighten natural teeth, but for each individual the color change and the time to see that color change will be different. The product used to lighten the teeth has been used in dentistry for many years to lighten teeth that have darkened due trauma. A form of hydrogen peroxide, either hydrogen peroxide itself or its more stable version, carbamide peroxide, is the most effective solution for removing the stains inside the tooth. Regardless of the bleaching modality used, it is a time and concentration phenomenon between the enamel prisms. When applied to the tooth the hydrogen peroxide breaks down into hydroxyl ions. These ions work their way through the tubules and into the tooth, they attach to the stain particles and break the stains apart. As the stains are removed the teeth will appear whiter; thus teeth whitening will occur.

Not all teeth can lighten.  There are some stains that this gel solution will not change.  Teeth that have been affected by tetracycline (an antibiotic given during the time the permanant teeth were forming) do not respond to teeth whitening.

At Home Teeth Whitening

The Teeth Whitening at home procedure takes two visits to impress for the home use trays.  During your first visit we will take impressions of both your upper and lower arch of teeth. This is sent to the lab and the teeth whitening trays will be fabricated and delivered in about 4 – 5 days.   Your second appointment takes about 10 minutes.  We will demonstrate how apply the teeth whitening gel in the tray and give instructions.
